Training Your Dog In A Nutshell
When you first meet your dog, chances are he didn't show his true colors and may have come to you with a few "problems". Don't worry, with proper techniques even the worst dog can learn to be well behaved.
Keeping your dog active is an important part of successful dog training and is also good for their health. Dogs are not made to sit around. Dogs need to run around and do activities with their owners to be at their best. Try enrolling in an agility course, going for a run, or practicing Frisbee skills with your dog. Do not let your dog get bored, but keep it moving as much as you can.
Clickers are a great way to reinforce good behavior from your dog. If you give your dog an award when you used the clicker, it will be easier to train. Attempt to click and treat immediately and do this several times for a few days. Over time, your dog will learn that the clicking noise means he is doing something correctly.
Big dogs need a bed that can accommodate them, especially if they like to stretch and sleep on their back. You can give your dog a bed that is sized appropriately, or consider an unconventional bed for your dog, such as a crib mattress. These are advantageous for the fact that you are able to regularly change the cover by using crib sheets. They're waterproof, too!
Challenge your dog frequently. While you may know your dog hasn't forgotten anything, try little tests to ensure he remembers all the commands he's learned up to that point.
Getting your dog to hang onto his favorite toy with his mouth, for example, is easy. When he puts the toy around his mouth, use a training clicker and offer him a treat. After this is done a few times, watch and wait for your dog to put the toy inside his mouth. After has has done this, you should click and promptly give a reward. Next, only give him a reward if he holds the toy using his mouth.
Use treats your dog really loves to achieve maximum training efficiency. This is one time you can use something you would not usually give them, like meat.
Your dog needs to understand how to go to a vet exam. Gently run your hands across his whole body, and praise him for calm behavior. Help him to tolerate the vet handling his paws and mouth. Ask some of your family and friends to assist you with this.
Don't bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. Puppies do not have a very long attention span and limited energy, keep it brief and positive. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.
If hiring an animal behavior professional is something you are considering, make sure to learn as much about them as you can. Many of these professionals have different techniques that they will use to train a dog. You should know whether or not you agree with their methods before hiring them to train your pet!
Never try to train a dog while you're short on patience. If you've had a bad day or are unusually short-tempered for some other reason today, it's better to put off training until another day. Dogs need patience from you or they will quickly lose their own, and all focus on training will be gone.
Something you could do is put a toy in the dog's mouth and keep it there. Start by using a clicker and treating him every time he picks up a toy in his mouth. Wait until the dog has the toy in his mouth. After using the clicker, reward him with a treat. It is important to only reward him again if he picks up the toy with his mouth on his own.
Dogs learn quickest through repetition and positive reinforcement. You need to make sure your dog understands what the expected behavior is, be consistent in your expectations and practice the behaviors daily. This is how a dog will learn to perform a trick. Show your pet the right way through rewards and repetition.
Refrain from playing tug-of-war with your puppy while you in the process of training him. These kinds of games may encourage your dog to bite your hands. Tug-of-war can be played once you have trained your puppy; however, it should not be played before the dog is completely trained.
It's important to use treats that really capture your dog's full attention when training. This is one time you can use something you would not usually give them, like meat.
Using a variety of goodies for reward purposes while training is sometimes the best method. These treats should be easily distinguishable from the common biscuit variety you may give your dog on a regular basis as special achievements in training merit special edibles in reward.
Although a harness might look comforting to your dog, they aren't as controlling as a collar that cinches. Use both the harness and collar together, pulling the collar only when you need to. This will eventually train the dog to obey in the harness alone.
You should always check credentials before hiring anyone to help you understand your animal's behavior better. Animal behavior professionals tend to have different opinions on how to train a dog correctly. That is why it is important that the trainer you hire is in agreement with your own techniques, before they use their techniques on your dog.
When doing crate training, train your dog incrementally rather than trying to do it all at once. Allow them to feel comfortable in their crate by closing the door and feeding them treats while praising them. Start off only putting them inside for 10 seconds, and when they seem okay with that, slowly increase the time they are inside. If your puppy starts acting distressed about going into the create, you need to slow things down.
Whenever you want your dog's attention, use its name. You will not be able to control your dog if you do not get his attention first. Practice calling your dog's name and letting him respond at least tens times a day. Also, it is very inappropriate for you to call the dog over to you and then punish him, as this will teach him to fear you and discourage him from coming when called.
When you get your puppy, be sure to create a bond to him by helping him learn his name. Repeat his name regularly, so he will learn to come to you when he hears it. These should be the primary words your dog needs to learn. Spending a lot of time interacting and playing with your puppy is the best way to establish a bond of love and trust. This will make him easier to train later.
